Eduardo completed his return from injury by scoring the only goal for Croatia as they won 1-0 at home to Israel. His goal in the 52nd minute ends the Israelis’ hopes of qualification from Group E and means that if England avoid defeat in Russia on Wednesday Slaven Bilic’s men will qualify for Euro 2008. Failing this, a win in either of their remaining two fixtures will be enough.

Emmanuel Adebayor’s hopes of qualifying for January’s African Cup of Nations were dashed on Friday. Sevilla striker Freddi Kanoute and Mamadou Diallo scored in either half for Mali as they ran out 2-0 winners in Lome. The result is good news for Arsenal fans as it means Adebayor will not miss a large chunk of early 2008 as expected.

The youngster was instrumental in his team’s 2-0 half-time lead and was unlucky not to score himself three minutes before the interval ― his effort finding the crossbar via the glove of Tomas Sorenson. Goals from Tamudo, Sergio Ramos and Albert Riera means Spain move level on points with Sweden at the top of Group F having played a game more.

Nicklas Bendtner played for the entire second half as Denmark were beaten 3-1 by Spain in Copenhagen. Goals from Tamudo and Sergio Ramos gave the Spaniards a solid cushion at the interval before Jon Dahl Tommason pulled one back three minutes from time. Albert Riera completed the scoring with a debut goal shortly before the end. The Danes had fought gamely after the restart and Bendtner was twice denied as they searched for a breakthrough. The tall striker was first prevented from scoring by a reaction save from Iker Casillias and then saw a long-range drive canon back off the post. Denmark are now six poimts adrift of Group F leaders Sweden with three games to play.

Alex Hleb was once again his country’s outstanding player but was unable to prevent a 95th-minute winner for Luxembourg in Gomel on Saturday. Hleb’s Belarus were already too far adrift in Group G to qualify, but Fons Lewek’s goal inflicted their seventh defeat of this campaign and leaves them just four points off the bottom of the table. The win was Luxembourg’s first in competitive football in 15 years.

Henry’s goal was his 41st for his country and puts him level with Michel Platini in the list of all-time record scorers. Lasanna Diarra replaced Claude Makelele with less than 20 minutes remaining, while William Gallas remained on the bench.

Philippe Senderos was replaced at half-time but was able to watch his team record a 3-1 win over Euro 2008 hosts Austria. A Marcos Streller strike in the second minute was cancelled out nine minutes later by Rene Aufhauser, but Hakan Yakin restored the lead before the break. Streller completed the scoring with his second on 55 minutes to avenge the defeat in the reverse fixture one year ago. Arsenal loanee Johan Djourou played for 90 minutes.

夏の移籍マーケットで、補強の遅れが懸念されるアーセナル。昨シーズンの王者マンチェスター・ユナイテッドやリバプールが大型補強を敢行し、チェルシーも 例年よりは控えめながらピンポイントの補強でチーム力を確実にアップする中、エースのティエリ・アンリを放出したアーセナルは、ブラジル生まれのクロアチ ア代表FWエドゥアルド・ダ・シルバを獲得した以外、目立った戦力補強に手をつけていない。

　しかし、指揮官のアーセン・ベンゲル監督 は、これ以上攻撃陣に新戦力を迎え入れるつもりがないことを明言。ボルトンのFWニコラ・アネルカの獲得が噂されているが、1997-98シーズンにアー セナルのダブル（リーグ戦とFAカップの2冠）達成に貢献したこのフランス代表の復帰についてキッパリと否定したベンゲルは、レンタル先のバーミンガムか ら復帰した19歳のデンマーク人FWニクラス・ベントナーを攻撃陣のキーマンに挙げた。

「新たにFWを獲得するかだって？　それはない。すでにエドゥアルドを獲得したからね。これ以上ストライカーは獲得しないよ。今シーズン、私は二クラス・ベントナーが一皮むけると確信している。その潜在能力を存分に発揮してくれるはずだ」

　 アネルカに加え、ニューカッスルのナイジェリア代表FWオバフェミ・マルティンスも獲得候補に挙げられていたアーセナル。しかしベンゲルは、「ベルカンプ とアンリを足して2で割ったような選手」と評するロビン・ファン・ペルシや、トーゴ代表のエマヌエル・アデバヨールといった現有戦力の奮起に加え、ベント ナーなど若手の台頭を求める意味で、絶対的なエースを失った攻撃陣の補強をあえてダ・シルバのみに留めている。熱きのメッセージが込められた知将ベンゲル の“荒療治”は、若きガンナーズ達に届くだろうか。

アーセナルのアーセン・ベンゲル監督が、ティエリ・アンリのバルセロナ移籍について、ついにその重い口を開いた。

　ベンゲルは、8年間の在籍期間でクラブ史上最高のストライカーと評されるまでに成長したアンリが移籍を決断した経緯について、「すべては彼の決断」と断言。そこには“我慢の限界”があったのだろうとの仮説を立てて、愛弟子のバルサ移籍を説明した。

「ワー ルドクラスの選手を失うのは、もちろん痛手だ。それも、移籍するはずがないと思っていた選手の移籍であれば特にね。最終的に、移籍を決断したのはティエリ 自身だ。そもそも彼は、移籍の願望を持ち続けていたのだろう。今回のような決断はすぐに下せるものではないからね。監督やチームスタッフは、常に選手の心 理状態に気を配っている。しかし、最後に決断を下すのは選手なのだよ。今回も、私の決断ではなく、ティエリが望んだことだ。彼ももうすぐ30歳になる。も う若手主体のチームが成長するのを待つ余裕がなかったのかもしれない。十分に理解できることだ。タフな決断だったとは思うがね」

　絶対的 なエースを失ったアーセナルだが、FW陣の補強については、決して順調とはいえない。今夏に獲得したFWは、クロアチア代表のデドゥアルド・ダ・シルバの みと、いまだ選手層に不安を残す状態だ。しかし指揮官は、現有戦力からFWの3選手を名指しし、その奮起を促している。

「今回のような移 籍があった場合こそ、（ロビン・）ファン・ペルシ、（エマヌエル・）アデバヨール、（セオ・）ウォルコットといった選手が立ち上がらなくてはならない。彼 らの能力には疑いがない。あとは、それをピッチ上で表現して欲しい。毎シーズン、ティエリが記録していた25ゴールを、彼らに穴埋めして欲しいんだ。彼ら は、このチームの中で責任を負うべき立場なのだ。個人の能力に頼りすぎず、チームプレーに徹すれば、ティエリの穴を埋めることも可能だ」

　 アンリの移籍について、あくまで冷静に語ったベンゲル。複雑な心境を表に出さず、若手のモチベーションを高める“ネタ”にするあたり、育成に定評のある知 将の真骨頂といったところ。来シーズンは、事あるごとに“アンリの穴”が指摘されるであろうアーセナルにとって、若手選手を操るベンゲルのチームマネージ メントがシーズンの行方を左右しそうだ。

アーセナルは、ディナモ・ザグレブ所属のクロアチア代表FWエドゥアルド・ダ・シルバの獲得を発表した。ティエリ・アンリをバルセロナに放出し、戦力とし て計算できるFWが、ロビン・ファン・ペルシとエマヌエル・アデバヨールの2人だけとなっていたアーセナルが、ようやく攻撃陣の補強に踏み切った形だ。 ディナモのミルコ・バリシッチ会長は、ダ・シルバの放出で1625万ポンド（約40億円）の移籍金を手にしたと語っているが、『BBC』の報道では、実際 の金額は750万ポンド（約20億円）程度であると伝えられている。

　ブラジル出身のダ・シルバは、15歳でクロアチアに渡り、22歳で 国籍を取得。すでにクロアチア代表にも選出されており、7ゴールを記録している。新天地となるアーセナルとは、昨シーズンのチャンピオンズ・リーグ予備予 選で対戦。アーセナルが5-1で勝利したエミレーツ・スタジアムでの対戦では、ディナモ唯一のゴールをダ・シルバが奪っている。

　今回の 移籍について、「ディナモを去るのは悲しい。でも、アーセナルのような世界有数のビッグクラブに加入できたことはすごく嬉しいよ」と語ったダ・シルバ。昨 シーズンのクロアチアリーグで、史上最多の34ゴールを記録したブラジル生まれのストライカーは、大黒柱アンリを失ったアーセナルの救世主となれるだろう か。

セビージャのチャンピオンズリーグデビューは全く良いところなく終わった。神経質な無名クラブをエミレーツ・スタジアムに迎えたアーセナルは、そんな相手 を同情することもなく３－０で打ち負かした。“チャンピオンズ”のエキスパートであるアーセナルに対し、この試合のセビージャはより「純心無垢な」側面を 見せた。それは数日前にデル・ニド会長が指摘していた通り、この大会におけるセビージャが「未経験の新入り」であることを証明する結果となった。

　 チャンピオンズリーグ初経験のセビージャにとって、アウェイのアーセナル戦という舞台ほどデビューに不都合なものはなかった。恐らく、この対戦が決まった 時から彼らの神経質は始まっていたのだろう。コンビネーションはばらばら、攻撃は馬鹿正直、フィジカルコンタクトは弱い、、、この日のセビージャは普段と は全く別のチームだった。それはアーセナルも同じで、先制点が生まれるまではどちらのチームもチャンスを作ることができていなかった。

　 何の危険もないと思われたセスク・ファブレガスのシュートは、一瞬のうちに決定的なゴールへと姿を変えた。エスクデの腕に当たったボールがその進路を変え ると、パロップが触れることは不可能となったのだ。このゴールは、それまで少なくとも安定したディフェンスを見せていたセビージャに大きなダメージを与え た。唯一カヌーテだけが、ゴール前にＧＫアルムニアがいることを思い出させてくれた。

　フアンデ・ラモス監督は後半、ルイス・ファビアー ノに代えてケルジャコフを投入。チームに刺激を与えようと試みるが、この日のセビージャは運にも見放されていた。既に先制点のシーンでアーセナルに微笑ん でいた幸運は、ファン・ペルシーが決めた追加点の場面でも再び姿を現した。セスクの蹴ったボールがニアポストに飛ぶ。手前の選手がヘディングを誤ると、 コースを変えたボールはファン・ペルシーの足元へと収まった。彼がパロップを打ち破ると、セビージャは何の収穫も得ぬままに敵地に別れを告げることとなっ た。

　積極性を見せたナバス、そして常に自分の仕事を全うするポールセンだけが、この重要な一戦で十分なパフォーマンスを見せていた。だ が、セビージャが良いイメージを残すにはそれだけでは不十分だった。事実、９０分間のうちに放った枠内シュートは僅か１本しかなかったことを、試合後の データが明かしていた。

　ファシオのとんでもないミスが生んだエドゥアルドの３点目は、結果的には些細な失点だったものの、デビュー戦で 見せたパフォーマンスの悪さをより際立たせるものとなった。彼らがここまで苦しむ必要はなかった。だが、セビージャの本当の姿とはかけ離れたイメージを提 供してしまったのは事実だ。今は次節、サンチェス・ピスフアンにスラビア・プラハを迎える一戦で、今回の敗戦を挽回することを期待するのみだ。
